It is a type of therapeutic massage highly recommended to treat muscle pain, regenerate scar tissue and relax chronic contractures. It provides prolonged relief to patients with recurrent contractures and stiffness, especially in the neck, upper back, lower back, shoulders and legs.
When muscles are tightened, the arrival of oxygen and nutrients to tissues is blocked, resulting in inflammation and accumulation of toxins in muscle tissue. Therefore, deep tissue massage offers many advantages to athletes and people with limited mobility or who are dealing with high levels of stress.
If this is your first time scheduling a deep massage session, here's all you need to know.
A deep tissue massage uses similar techniques to those of a relaxing massage, but with slower movements and more intense pressure concentrated on specific areas of tension and/or pain, to reach the deeper layers of the muscles and connective tissue.
During deep massage therapy, you may experience slight discomfort at certain stress points. Therefore, it is important that you communicate at all times with your massage therapist to let him or her know if the pain is outside your comfort zone, and he or she will make the necessary adjustments to make your experience the best it can be. Keep in mind that a little muscle stiffness may always appear one or two days after the massage, but always accompanied by an overall positive feeling. A cold compress can be applied to the area after the massage to relieve any discomfort.
Consider that deep massage releases accumulated toxins, so it is important to drink plenty of water after the session to remove metabolic waste from the tissues.
Unlike relaxing or Swedish massage, deep tissue seeks to deeply manipulate the tissues, so its health benefits are superior, although some patients find the session itself not particularly relaxing. However, if there is proper communication with the masseur, the experience can be truly enjoyable.
Another important difference is that deep tissue massage does have some contraindications, so check with your doctor if you suffer from blood clots, have had recent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or any other medical intervention.
