What is Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal massage is a relaxing massage designed specifically to reduce the discomforts of pregnancy, such as back and headaches, cramps and fluid retention. It is also a great way to promote an optimal pregnancy when given regularly from the fourth to the ninth month, as it improves circulation and relieves stress.

Massage during pregnancy is also a great way to pamper yourself and help your body adapt better to the progressive changes of pregnancy. These are sessions during which you can concentrate solely on your feelings and emotions, as well as on connecting deeply with your baby, in an ideal state of peace and relaxation.

Prenatal massage technique

For prenatal massage, mainly techniques related to Swedish or traditional relaxing massage are used. The difference is that the pregnant woman's body is in a delicate moment and there are postures and movements that should be avoided to ensure her well-being and that of her baby. Extensive knowledge of the anatomy of pregnancy is needed to properly accommodate and manipulate the patient, maximizing benefits and eliminating risks.

As a general rule, circular, extensive, gentle and superficial movements are used, and too deep muscle stimulation is avoided, as well as massaging the abdomen directly. Special essential oils can be used to promote relaxation.

It is recommended that you do not consume any liquids or food for at least two hours before your massage, so that you feel more comfortable and do not feel heavy or nauseous.

Does Prenatal massage have any contraindications?

This type of massage is designed for women who are in their second or third trimester, and who are going through a normal, healthy, low-risk pregnancy. Even in these cases, you should always consult your doctor before making an appointment with one of our prenatal massage therapy specialists.
