What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a physiotherapeutic technique that focuses on the areas of the body that receive the greatest mechanical impact and/or wear as a result of repetitive movements and intense sport-specific contact.

Massage for athletes is a professional tool that helps optimize muscle performance, prevent and treat injuries, reduce fatigue, eliminate toxins - such as uric acid, which accumulates in large amounts between tissues after physical activity - and promote blood circulation in areas with greater tension and stiffness.

This is a beneficial practice for athletes of all kinds, and especially for those with specific problems such as "runner's knees", "frozen shoulder", tears and tibial periostitis, among others.

How do you do a sports massage?

Sports massage is more like deep tissue and lymphatic drainage massage than the typical Swedish relaxing massage. However, the intensity is modulated with great precision according to the damage to the muscle groups or the type of preparation needed.

The maneuvers are usually slow, wide and deep, include vibrations, percussions, friction and kneading, and often involve full movement of the limbs. It is also common to use some type of essential oil with analgesic and/or anti-inflammatory effects.

Types of sports massage

Sports massage can be categorized into four main functions:

Pre-training sports massage: Helps relax and prepare the body to improve performance and endurance during routine training, as well as prevent injuries. It is usually done a couple of hours before or even immediately before training.

Pre-competition sports massage: Must be performed between twenty-four and six hours before a competition or sports event. Its main objective is to increase blood circulation, oxygenation, temperature and muscle elasticity, preparing the body to perform adequately under very intense activity conditions.

Post competition sports massage: Its objective is to relieve contractures, drain toxins released by the body's effort and promote blood circulation and oxygenation in the muscles that received the most impact, reducing recovery time. It is performed between thirty minutes and eight hours after a competition.

Maintenance sports massage: It is performed every week or two to prevent and treat contractures, reduce accumulated muscle fatigue and maintain elasticity. It can also be used as a routine decontracting massage.
