What is Lymphatic Drainage massage?

It is a special massage therapy technique that focuses on stimulating the lymph nodes and proper lymph circulation. Our lymphatic system is in charge of discarding a great part of the toxins and metabolites that our body produces, keeping the blood free of harmful agents that hinder the correct oxygenation, nutrition, immune defense and regeneration of the tissues.

There are some conditions that particularly affect the lymphatic system, such as obesity, diabetes or hypertension. However, lymphatic drainage is also beneficial for people who have been subjected to high levels of stress or anxiety. If this is your first time requesting a massage of this type, here we explain everything you need to know.

How is a Manual Lymphatic Drainage done?

The main objective of the lymphatic massage technique is to stimulate the automatic contraction of the lymphatic vessels to conduct the toxins to the excretory system. For this reason, it is based on repetitive, slow, wide and upward movements from the extremities. The manipulation is firm, but not "strong" or too deep, and direct pressure on the lymph nodes is avoided.

During a manual lymph drainage session, special emphasis is placed on areas that have fluid retention or lymphedema, such as the ankles and calves. Sessions normally last between 60 and 120 minutes, as sustained stimulation is sought, and should be completely painless and comfortable for the patient.

The lymphatic massage can be complemented with relaxing music and essential oils.

When to do a Lymphatic Massage?

If you've been having problems lately with swelling, infections, fluid retention and even lack of energy, lymphatic drainage helps naturally remove what your body doesn't need and recharge your batteries.

If you suffer from fibromyalgia, stress, anxiety, insomnia, inflammation, arthritis or any related condition, recurrent lymphatic massage can be a good aid to your treatment, after consulting your doctor.

During pregnancy, circulatory difficulties and edema are common. There is a particular variant called Prenatal Massage, which resorts to several of the techniques of lymphatic massage, but taking into account the physiology, needs and specific risks of the pregnant woman.

If professional relaxing massages are a frequent part of your personal care routine, consider interspersing a lymphatic drainage massage every few sessions to protect your immune system as well.

What are the contraindications of Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

If you have an acute or chronic medical condition, you should consult your doctor whenever you consider undergoing any kind of massage, especially lymphatic drainage. Some of the most common contraindications are

  • Acute infections
  • Heart and blood clotting problems
  • Low pressure
  • Cancer
