When you imagine your vacation in Cancun, it is very likely that the first thing that comes to your mind is to spend most of the time in a bathing suit under the sun. But, surprise! It rains in Cancun too. And if you already live in Cancun, you know what we are talking about.

One of the peculiarities of this semi-tropical climate is that it can rain intensely and a few hours later, have a bright sun; or be in the rain and see that a few kilometers away it does not rain at all.

It is not possible to forecast the weather in Cancun more than a week in advance, but knowing that the rainy season (and also the hottest) is from May to October, can help you plan your activities better.

Fact: In Cancun, the sky is clear an average of 240 to 253 days a year.

What to do in Cancun when it rains? First of all, don't panic. If you are on vacation, think about it, the purpose of a vacation is to get out of your routine, to rest, to take a break; and there are many ways to continue doing so even if it is raining. In fact, when it rains is when we tend to really take a break, with low-impact activities. And if you live in Cancun, but don't know what to do because of the rain, take it as a sign to slow down your day-to-day activities.

In this article we give you 8 ideas of what to do in Cancun when it rains:

Take refuge in charming places and enjoy a long and relaxed meal.

In Cancun's hotel zone you have for example the Bohemian Square, which, although famous for its terraces overlooking the Nichupte lagoon, also has incredible interiors, where you can enjoy its diverse cuisine, art, fashion, fireworks and music, as it has several restaurants of different specialties.

You can also book a table at OpenTable at one of the many specialized restaurants inside the hotels, from the most traditional to the most modern; or visit the Marina Puerto Cancun, where they also have a great variety of restaurants, most of them with a spectacular view.

If you are looking for a local experience, downtown, you can visit the #RutaNader. Located in one of the oldest avenues in Cancun where you can find some of the first houses of Cancun and that, thanks to a group of civil associations, artists, photographers, architects and local designers, have given it a new life, welcoming several restaurants and bars. For example, you can eat some delicious tacos at El Socio Naiz and then stop for drinks at Amarula, with a tropical accent; the time will fly by!

Huayacán Avenue is also booming, with constant openings of high quality restaurants. What are you craving for?

2. Enjoy local food from the comfort of your home, Airbnb or hotel.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the offer of restaurants with home delivery service has grown exponentially around the world, and Cancun is no exception, in addition to having the help of applications such as Uber Eats or Rappi, which facilitate this task.

If you already have a restaurant in mind, but you want a home delivery service, contact them; it is very likely that they do offer this service.

If you are open to listen to new recommendations, let yourself be advised by experts in local gastronomy, such as Ainhoa García who, on her Instagram account @prueboyapruebo gives restaurant recommendations, including home delivery services.

3. Learn to cook new dishes with cooking classes in Cancun.

If your love for food goes from the moment you choose the ingredients, prepare them, cook them and finally eat them, the cooking classes offered by Cancun Food Tours are for you. They take care of everything for you to enjoy the experience of learning how to cook typical Mexican dishes.

Or you can also explore among the experiences offered by some people on Airbnb Experiences.

4. Prepare an afternoon of games and cocktails.

Board games are a classic that never goes out of fashion, even as adults, because nowadays there is a wide variety of games focused exclusively on adults.

Give it that "adults only" touch with a cocktail party. You can buy everything you need at supermarkets that offer delivery service, such as Walmart, Chedraui or Mega Soriana, or use apps like Cornershop.

How about a margarita party? The recipe for margaritas is very simple:

  • Two measures of tequila
  • One measure of triple sec (orange liqueur, such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier)
  • A measure of lemon juice
  • Salt to frost the glasses
  • Ice to cool the shaker.

5. Indoor culture

If culture is your thing, you can choose to go to one of the shows at the Cancun Theater, visit an art store like Venimos a ver ( by appointment), or schedule an activity like those offered by Pinta y tinto, where you can go to their facilities or order a home delivery service to paint a picture while enjoying a glass of wine.

6. Ignore the rain and go out and get wet (except if there is a thunderstorm).

If you are certain that it is NOT a thunderstorm, you may want to become a little guy again and go out, even in the rain, to walk the beaches of Cancun or even take a dip. Many times, despite the rain, the wind chill can be very hot and a refreshing swim sounds like a great plan.

Or how about practicing water activities in Cancun, in the rain? It's sure to be a different experience than usual.

7. If you are in a hotel, explore it!

It is a good time to get to know your hotel. We usually spend the days at the beach or doing excursions outside, getting to know the destination, and leave aside the hotel facilities that can be spectacular.

In addition, hotels usually organize many activities for their guests: from contests, pool tournaments, ping pong, among others, so it will be a great opportunity to meet other people and have a good time.

8. Book an experience of in-home massages

Dedicate a day to relax and pamper your mind and body, or plan a SPA day with your partner, by booking in-home massages in Cancun with the best therapists in the city. In Zen to Go we have a strict selection program of therapists to offer you only certified therapists with at least 5 years of experience in first level centers.
